The First Step

Reminder: A virus can't force its way into just any cell — the proteins on its surface only fit the matching receptor on a specific kind of host cell, the way a key only fits one lock. Once it's attached, the virus injects or releases its genetic material, hijacks the cell's machinery to build new viruses, and the cell eventually bursts open, releasing thousands of new viruses to infect nearby cells.
